Renaud Philippe, Errance sans retour
« Ils ont aussi tué mon père » | "They also killed my father"

By Pierre Dessureault

First the title of a documentary film shot in a refugee camp, then of a museum exhibition, the Errance sans retour project is based on Renaud Philippe’s photographic practice. In his essay, Pierre Dessureault not only rightly reminds us of this, he pays tribute to the humanistic work of Philippe, who is also a photojournalist. “The constant in this documentary work is the fate of human beings placed by history in extreme conditions,” Dessureault writes. “It is not natural catastrophes or political conflicts in themselves that interest him but the collective tragedies that these events engender.” Dessureault analyzes the wide scope that Philippe’s images have depending on how they are displayed (print press, film theatre, museum). The result is a “sensory experience” for viewers, which helps to give the images “a meaning that is not monolithic but moving and dependent on each viewer’s thoughts.”
