James Coleman, What Goes Around Comes Around
On récolte ce que l’on sème | What Goes Around Comes Around

By Stephen Horne

This essay on the practice of the Irish artist James Coleman takes as pretext the retrospective of his work at the Centre Pompidou. In his detailed review of the exhibition and beyond, Stephen Horne brings up the importance that Coleman accords to play – play associated, as it is in theatre, with dissimulation “or deception.” Coleman appropriates aspects of theatre and the media to endow his installations with “the appearance of an intervention ... being prepared in the studio, prior to being filmed,” writes Horne. His use of different temporalities, repetition, multiple voices, interior monologue, and discontinuous, fragmented narratives makes his work “a compelling experience.” In Horne’s view, “Coleman, like [Dan] Graham, emphasizes the place of pleasure and play in the activity of ‘looking.’”
