— Ariane Noël de Tilly
The New York exhibition covering thirty years of French photographer Sarah Moon’s career highlighted, through granular-textured images, her penchant for the enigmatic and the unsaid. These “one-second fictions,” as Moon calls her works, are “moments fixed in time ... about to tip into motion,” as Ariane Noël de Tilly observes. “It is up to us, the public, to imagine what preceded it and what will follow.” From the tight-set hanging chosen by Moon and the dimly lit galleries, like a movie theatre before a screening, emanated “a succession of mysterious scenes, or perhaps a series of dreams.” Through these “visually sublime” banal settings, Noël de Tilly writes, Moon “offers the freedom to create one’s own film.”
