Based on a rereading of French photographic production in the 1930s, the exhibition Décadrage colonial underlined the contradictions of an era fascinated by cultures from “elsewhere” and concerned with redefining the image of a nation. Claudia Polledri discusses the strategies used in this fierce and necessary critique of the colonial undertaking, in the hope that museums will take it as an example.
