Hito Steyerl, This is the future
Art Gallery of Ontario
October 24, 2019–February 23, 2020
By Jill Glessing
The retrospective exhibition devoted to German artist Hito Steyerl at the Art Gallery of Ontario brought together ten video installations, in which the principal strategy, editing, is used to produce “dazzling collisions,” as Jill Glessing observes. To deal with themes that are serious and profound, such as exploitation by political and economic powers, Steyerl turns to elements of pop culture and dance beats. In Glessing’s view, this constant contrast between the theme addressed and the form adopted is inextricably linked to the “restorative processes of resistance” at work within hegemonic realms. The works chosen by the AGO deal with realities as diverse as that of Tibetan refugees faced with a housing crisis and that of a laboratory that violently tests the stability of robots.
