MOMENTA 2019, Biennale de l’image
À l’écoute des choses | Listening to Things

By Charles Guilbert

In his critical survey of the second edition of MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image, Charles Guilbert doesn’t take an exhaustive look at the event. But he does cover enough artists (fourteen out of the thirty-eight) to give a good idea of the scope and relevance of the biennale’s theme: the relationship between humans and objects. Guilbert articulates his thoughts along his own axes of interpretation – the angles chosen by the artists, he says – distancing himself from those chosen by the curator, María Wills Londoño. He takes us through the themes of erasure (of the human figure), juxtaposition (such as that of the disfigured man and the broken mask in one of Kader Attia’s works), fusion between bodies and things (“subjectivity – and identity-related questions – often seem to cannibalize the object,” he laments), and, finally, subjugation (the devotion to objects). “The rhizomatic path through Momenta,” he concludes, “leads to a tragic reflection on humans’ passion for things,” leaving no doubt as to which path to follow when it comes to material overproduction.
