Chloé Beaulac, Ces lieux qui nous habitent
Territoires de la mémoire | Territories of Memory

By Dominique Sirois-Rouleau

Impelled by the Missions photographiques des Laurentides to travel through the region where she had spent her childhood, Chloé Beaulac produced a photographic series imbued with her personal experience of the area. Her quest was guided by memories, but the landscape that she found was different, transformed by the industrialization of nature. From this confrontation arose images marked, as Dominique Sirois-Rouleau notes in her essay, by the “mutability of reality.” “Facts and emotions shift over time,” Sirois-Rouleau continues, “causing reality to move into an almost-truth of its own.” Enchanting or disquieting, the places portrayed teeter between the never-before-seen and the familiar, the invented and the true. In her reconstruction of memory, Beaulac follows another process of reconstruction – that of the image. Although the result is personal, she develops a universal representation of the Laurentian landscape, in Sirois-Rouleau’s view. “Nothing,” she concludes, “is really limited to one truth, one status, or one use.” Ces lieux qui nous habitent expresses our relationship with our own past.
