Ewa Monika Zebrowski, The Photobook
The Photobook as a Space of Collaboration | Le livre photographique comme espace de collaboration

By Zoë Tousignant

Taking a look at Ewa Monika Zebrowski’s practice and publications since the early 2000s, Zoë Tousignant re-evaluates the principle that photobooks are uniquely the product of the photographers to whom they are attributed. A name is a guide, of course, for delving into a collection of photographs, but it is also, still, a way of making creative genius an individual endeavour. “The notion of the author is a useful device that can help obscure the fact that, behind a single name, an entire industry is at work,” Tousignant notes. Her essay, written in a fluid, dynamic style, shows how Zebrowski is an example of openness and enrichment. Her books are the sum of the knowledge and creative skills of people working in binding, publishing, graphic design, printing, writing, and art. In Tousignant’s view, Zebrowski not only profits from the contributions of colleagues, she “has given them a space to exist in her work.”
