Et fili ? De la transmission culturelle et du livre de photographie québécois | Et fili? Cultural Transmission and the Quebec Photobook
By Michel Hardy-Vallée
This overview of eight photographic projects, most of them in book form, poses the question of cultural transmission. Looking more closely at Quebec projects, both recent and older, Michel-Hardy Vallée weaves a history of photography as “a succession of generations.” In a lively, bold style, elegantly drawing on the personal and the collective – quoting In Flanders Fields’ “’To you from flailing hands we throw / The torch’” – Hardy-Vallée demonstrates that historical continuity has multiple variants. From reproduction to “formal puns,” from borrowing to collaboration, and with an “acid gaze” more than simple tribute.” “Walking in the footsteps of another is no more a lack of imagination than photography is a medium limited to representation of the visible,” he writes. “It is to recognize a relationship.”
