Sylvie Readman, Denis Rioux, Porosités
By Mona Hakim
Given their “common concern with the issues and properties of ... photographic language,” as Mona Hakim notes, Sylvie Readman and Denis Rioux joined forces for an exhibition on the theme of porosities. Readman’s images show walled spaces of various sorts and façades made of decaying stones; Rioux’s are of backyards and low walls revealing lines, angles, and shapes. For Hakim, the title of the exhibition evokes the subjects photographed and light-sensitive surfaces. She also sees in this show “the fusion of photographic conditions of appearance and disappearance” and a series of dualities such as materiality and immateriality. The dialogue between Readman and Rioux encourages viewers “to introduce themselves ... to the illusionistic plot that plays out between the walls.”
