Michel Hardy-Vallée has no doubt: a history of Quebec photography does well and truly exist. Given the absence of a reference book, given the abundance of disparate and dispersed writings, Hardy-Vallée proposes this prospectus, the “specifications for an eventual call for bids” for someone who wants to get this history down in writing. He addresses the “scope of the problem, the need to have the “instrumental or interpretive knowledge” needed to formulate an analysis that takes account of the longer term, of “continuity.” “Photography traverses Quebec, and the one leaves traces on the other,” he observes. “To write its history, we must mourn the passing of facile inferences, certain origins, and grand tradition.” He does recognize, however, that a book, as relevant as it might be, cannot answer all questions.
