A Trillion Sunsets. A Century of Image Overload
International Center of Photography, New York
28.01.2022 — 2.05.2022
— Sylvain Campeau
Grounded in its time – a time of “the surfeit of pictures,” as Sylvain Campeau puts it – the exhibition A Trillion Sunsets nevertheless had historical scope. Not only did it reach back to Dada and other sources of “this ‘image madness’ as it unfurls,” Campeau notes, but it also probed “how this might lead to the creation of visual clichés.” By including a 2017 video by Jess T. Dugan, he writes, the exhibition “remind[ed] us that every image has a life that goes beyond the limited social use that we want to make of it. That something, always, continues to vibrate in each of them, even if accumulating them until we are sated seems to betray the panicked idea that one alone cannot say something profound and real.”
