Disraeli – une expérience humaine en photographie
Retour sur l’aventure Disraeli | A Look Back at the Disraeli Adventure
— Pierre Dessureault
A half-century after what he terms an “adventure,” Pierre Dessureault proposes not to “commemorate” but to “describe the context that drew [the] contours” behind Disraeli – une expérience humaine en photographie. Based on the few and valuable written sources, Dessureault describes the steps before and after this “pivotal moment” in history when, for a summer, four photographs documented the daily life of residents of Disraeli, a town halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. Facts are related, participants quoted, and Dessureault looks back, rightly, at the controversy provoked by the publication of the photographs made by the group, called Imagerie populaire de Disraeli. “The confrontation of these opposed views,” Dessureault writes, “brings up the question of the image: what it gives, what it takes, what it communicates, what it receives.”
