JJ Levine’s solo exhibition, featuring some fifty large-format portraits, raised important societal issues. There is no doubt, in Didier Morelli’s view, that Levine’s exploration of the everyday and of queer life had “the stated goal of troubling traditional representations of binary gender roles.” In his review, Morelli notes the reach of each of the three photographic series shown, between the personal narratives of one and the broader social realities of the others. The series Alone Time, Morelli comments, “further complicates [Levine’s] use of traditional portraiture ... thus giving life to performative enunciations of gender identity and roles.”
