Justine Kurland: Highway Kind (A Love Story)
Jeunes hommes à risque | Young Men at Risk
— Moyra Davey
Justine Kurland presents excerpts from Highway Kind focusing on her son – who she raised on the road, taking him with her on all her photographic wanderings – showing his evolution from childhood to adulthood. It offers an opportunity to reflect on her anxieties about the future of her son in a country torn apart by antagonistic values. These are expressed through an exchange with Moyra Davey, who comments on Kurland’s images from the viewpoint of her own experience as a mother of a young adult grappling with the same reality. “One of the astonishing things ... is that its maker ‘does it all,’” writes Davey. Everything is captured on the fly, with a 35 mm camera rather than a cumbersome, demanding 4 x 5 camera and tripod. “I wanted Moyra to write about Highway Kind because I connected Casper, as-if-dead, to B.’s [her son’s] near-death crash last summer,” notes Kurland in an addendum.
