In the video installation 45th Parallel, inspired by the northern and southern frontiers of the United States, Lawrence Abu Hamdan explores the ambivalent nature of borders, which, as Jill Glessing observes, are increasingly porous to the transfer of capital but constantly tightening when it comes to human migration. Hamdan’s fascination with sound, which is unconfinable and can slip through where vision is obstructed, is inscribed, in Glessing’s view, in the idea that “border walls are ... like valves [that] can be opened and closed by those with power.” The narrative of this multifaceted work leads Glessing to conclude that borders are “both liquid and lethal” – and as leaky as sounds.
