Nicolas Baier, Procession
Manif d’art 10, Québec
19.02.2022 — 24.04.2022
— Edward Pérez-González
Because it zooms in and moves slowly and continuously, the “impeccably made work” – in Edward Pérez-González’s view – that Nicolas Baier presented at the Manif d’art 2022 seems “infinitely long.” The alternating images of a forest and of a server room are reminiscent, Pérez-González writes, of Stanley Kubrick’s use of the vanishing-point perspective. “Baier plays with the line between real and unreal, to the point that it becomes difficult to distinguish natural images and sounds from artificial ones,” Pérez-González notes. He regards Baier’s work as a trip into the nature-machine duality that refers to the binary model of Deleuze and Guattari’s spaces.
