Shirin Neshat
Le rêve comme acte de résistance | Dreams as Acts of Resistance
— Jill Glessing
“Unique artistic enterprise,” “mature creative project,” and “at once personal, poetic, and political” – this is how Jill Glessing describes Land of Dreams, the central work in Iranian-born artist Shirin Neshat’s exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto. In her detailed review, Glessing notes that Neshat used dreams to explore two of her realities: “resistance to oppression and experiences of separation.” In Land of Dreams, presenting studio portraits, a video installation, and a film, Neshat returns to these closely held themes, with a significant difference: attention is paid to the nation that has received her, the United States. Conceived with a desire for reconciliation “across an ideological divide,” Neshat’s works are a riposte to the Trump era’s white supremacist rhetoric. “The project humanizes the demonized Other,” Glessing writes.
