The museum-like succession of portraits was deceptive, notes Emmanuelle Choquette in her review of this exhibition about performance and its documentation. Following his Performances invisibles, Steve Giasson upsets tradition by focusing on “the figure of the artist and how that figure’s myth is staged.” Closer to tableaux vivants than to ego-portraits, the images are nevertheless inscribed in the present. About Giasson’s personification of Pinocchio, Choquette writes, “The photograph does not fail to find an echo in the current pandemic context, in which the ethics of living together is constantly challenged. Giasson’s reprise approach therefore involves the addition of new layers of meaning, making the images resonate both with the context of their original production and with that of their current display.”
