Carlos Ferrand Zavala, Resistencia. Perú, 1970–1975

By Alexis Desgagnés

Carlos Ferrand Zavala is best known for his film documentaries; he was previously a photographer. The exhibition Resistencia. Perú, 1970–1975, reviewed here by Alexis Desgagnés, unearthed what he had produced in his native Peru – a group of photographs and films produced in the early 1970s as the country began a vast agrarian reform. “His social concerns ... [foretold] ... later developments in his approach,” writes Desgagnés. Ferrand’s humanist vision was manifested through images of the alternative economy, living conditions among the poor, and even, in a rare fictional narrative, “a resolutely anti-colonial position.” Desgagnés notes that the exhibition both helped to bring Ferrand’s photographic work to recognition and was coherent with the historical perspectives of curator Zoë Tousignant’s preceding projects.
