Landscapes as Mirrors
What do wild, silent landscapes say about us? How do landscapes of childhood – those that awoke us to the world – shape us? What reflections of our own future do we find in the chaos of urban sites? “The city is a direct extension of the social body,” writes Jacques Doyon in his editorial, “and all of nature is a construction of culture that becomes meaningful only through the human gaze.” Near or far, landscapes are like mirrors, shaped by human presence. The three artists in this section remind us of this to different degrees, through their use of techniques such as calibration and image reconstruction and of the narrative potentials of photography.
