Because of the fleeting nature of the object that is central to Écrans motiles, Daniel Canty felt it was necessary to define, at the beginning of his review, the adjective in the title. “The term [motility] ... is borrowed from the life sciences, in which it describes the capacity of organisms – from amoebas to humans – to move thanks to an exchange of energy with their environment.” Sylvain Campeau, Canty writes, uses the word as a metaphor for contemporary art, human emotion, and the inanimate world. The book, he notes, “weaves together” essays about works that “challenge the dominance of the screen.” Although he has some reservations about the book, Canty acknowledges Campeau’s desire to paint a “portrait of a new ‘image continuum’” involving photography, video, and film.
