The combined expertise of Martha Langford and Johanne Sloan, along with that of the authors they have brought together, make this book unique. Although the question of what is photogenic is the starting premise, the exploration stretches beyond this aspect of photography. “The essays collected here,” Cheryl Simon comments, “bring together photographers and artists, historians of art and architecture, urban studies scholars, and activists and archivists in conversation about the activism and archives that have shaped Montreal as a post-industrial city.” She notes that all the photographs studied are “agents of change.” Their subjects,” she writes, are “sites of ongoing social and political negotiation.” Her review encompasses both parts of the book, one devoted to the contribution of images to collective mobilization and the other a more direct exploration of archives.
