Paul Roth, L’objectif derrière l’acquisition des archives Burtynsky | Finding Purpose: Burtynsky’s Archive at RIC
— An interview by Jérôme Delgado
Honoured by the trust in his institution evinced by Edward Burtynsky, the director of the Ryerson Image Centre agreed to talk about the celebrated photographer’s major donation of works. Paul Roth admits that there is not yet a plan for exhibiting this vast body of work, which covers all of Burtynsky’s career. He knows, however, that he wants to share his fascination with the evolution of his practice. “I was ... surprised by how Ed’s preoccupations were consistent,” Roth says. “He was ... interested in human attempts to control nature, but instead of ... aerial views of giant mining operations, as a young photographer he explored taxidermy, and factory farming, and canning operations, all from close in and still standing on the ground ... We will certainly seek opportunities to call public attention to this early work.”
