Franck Gérard, En l’état
Les rencontres photographiques de Franck Gérard | Franck Gérard’s Photographic Encounters
- Jacques Leenhardt
This portfolio brings together two essays. One sheds light on the practice of Franck Gérard, an “outdoor photographer” with an acerbic style, who is constantly “musing on the coincidences of situations, ever on the look-out.” The other consists of a collage of comments by Gérard on the images in his series En l’état. In Jacques Leenhardt’s view, “En l’état ... resembles a manifesto, as if Gérard wanted to affirm, by writing and photographing, that he takes himself for neither a writer nor a photographer.” His images, Leenhardt observes, stand as the closest reflection of a certain truth: without manipulation, staging, or any other intervention besides framing, they convey our lives and their extravagances. “As we know,” Leenhardt writes, “photography never totally escapes the real world, the evidence of which it preserves. And yet, what it shows is only the displaced reflection of this reality, the narrative of a ramble that could be described as dreamlike.”
