Following the creative burst that led him to launch his Performances invisibles in 2015, Steve Giasson occupied the virtual stage during the pandemic with another series of micro-interventions, called Nouvelles performances invisibles. This set of actions, posted on social media, were executed in front of the camera and without an audience, linking the artist’s body to the lens and reflecting both the lockdown and current sociopolitical events. “Making these insular histories accessible,” Didier Morelli observes, “Giasson crafts an imagery that is visually rich, deeply researched, always incisive, and sometimes lighthearted.” Based on “an ongoing dialogical process that pairs art history, wordplay, and movement,” Morelli writes, the new performances affirm the appropriative gesture by “expanding and collapsing the archive.” They also prove to be critical of the social customs and standardized codes that normalize social media.
