Andreas Rutkauskas, Refuge: After the Fire
La résilience des paysages | The Resilience of Landscapes

By Franck Michel

Perfectly adapted to its exhibition venue, which looks out to the surrounding forest, the project After the Fire displays images of catastrophe (burned forests), then more reassuring ones (the regeneration of these areas). Fire, as Andreas Rutkauskas shows, is a natural component of the natural life cycle. In Franck Michel’s view, the work of Rutkauskas, who lives in British Columbia, is inscribed in a vast photographic encyclopedia on landscapes under transformation. Nevertheless, “his approach,” Michel notes, “never protests or provokes, and it is not at all sensationalist.” Although After the Fire was developed within an interdisciplinary scientific research project, it is also related to the exploration undertaken by the “walking photographer.” “Rutkauskas’s photographs are such testimonials to this experience of the landscape,” writes Michel. “They bear its emotional and sensory weight.”
