Dawoud Bey, An American Project

By Ariane Noël de Tilly

The social function of Dawoud Bey’s photography was key to the retrospective exhibition of his work at the Whitney Museum of American Art. In Ariane Noël de Tilly’s view, this social function was palpable in each of the series on display; since his early career, Bey has foregrounded a spirit of collaboration, dialogue, and inclusion. Noël de Tilly describes images “caught on the fly” in Harlem, street scenes with children, Polaroid portraits, and landscapes from the recent series Night Coming Tenderly, Black, the only one without human figures. This series “is core” to Bey’s “American project,” writes Noël de Tilly, which is “to bring Black people and their history into the light of day.”
