Meryl McMaster, As Immense as the Sky
Le début de quelque chose de nouveau | The Beginning of Something New
— Lori Beavis
Meryl McMaster proposes to appropriate a natural territory, the primeval land of Turtle Island. Her approach is based on a return, both symbolic and ritual, both performative and sculptural, to certain foundations of Indigenous culture, which she transmutes into mysterious and disturbing images. From earth to sky, from a twig to the blowing wind, each element contributes to a cosmogony reactivated by a contemporary and idiosyncratic vision of the world in which Indigenous existence is central. “In donning this regalia, she performs stories of identity, history, and territorial contact, and she guides us through the past, into the present, and on into the times to come”, Lori Beavis writes, thinking on textiles and other materials that McMaster wears. Her gaze “both holds memory and is part of a continuum imbued with knowledge and power.”
