Sanaz Sohrabi, Hiding in Plain Sight: Archives of Oil
Centre d’art et de diffusion Clark, Montréal
From October 28 to November 27 2021
— Emmanuelle Choquette
Composed of photographs, documents, and text elements drawn from archives of an oil company, Sanaz Sohrabi’s exhibition at Centre Clark was the result of several years’ research devoted to “map[ping] a visual culture of oil.” In her review, Emmanuelle Choquette uncovers the tricks pointing to the political nature of images. The documents are displayed, in Choquette’s view, to stage a paradoxical history based, in large part, on Iran, where British Petroleum set up shop in 1909. “In a series of assemblages,” Choquette writes, “Sohrabi constructs two timelines that intertwine and overlap, and shows how the imperial heritage continues to influence the postcolonial imagination despite the desire to break up the visual regime.”
