Faits divers
— Julie Martin
Issues of representation were central to the exhibition on news items (faits divers) presented by MAC VAL. Structured in five thematic chapters, the artists selected by curators Nicolas Surlapierre, the museum’s director, and Vincent Lavoie, a photography historian, aligned with Roland Barthes’s view that the fait divers should not be relegated to the bottom of the informational hierarchy, but rather valued for its distinctiveness. Julie Martin reflects on a few memorable—or not so memorable—cases that have shaped our visual culture.
