Michaëlle Sergile
To All the Unamed Women
— Érika Nimis
Developed during a residency at the McCord Stewart Museum, the exhibition reviewed here highlights Montreal’s Black female community at the turn of the 20th century. The near absence of traces of these women in the archives studied—particularly the Notman photographic collection—led Michaëlle Sergile to turn to the Jacquard loom as a means of evoking marginality and anonymity. Érika Nimis frames the exhibition as a 'critical fabulation,' a concept developed by historian Sylvia Hartman to describe the construction of a past absent from dominant narratives.
