Daniel Hausmann
Backstage among the Urban Ruins | Dans les coulisses de la ruine urbaine
— Mona Hakim
Excited by her discovery, a few years ago, of the “atypical [and] not well enough known” photographic work of Daniel Hausmann, Mona Hakim looks back of almost thirty years of his images, from six series produced in Montreal’s abandoned industrial areas in his first project, SITEings (1993–95), to the recent Mes très belles heures (2016–20). “He investigates urban territories where unhoused people emerge from the shadows,” Hakim writes, “bit players brought into the light in the midst of hidden vestiges scattered throughout the city.” Documentary in style at first, Hausmann’s black-and-white photography became more and more subjective over the years. “His interest in exploring processes related to the camera and to cutting out and collaging images,” Hakim notes, “contributed to this new orientation.”
