Emmanuelle Léonard : Black Out : Les livreurs / The Deliverers
Those Who Wait for Us | Ceux qui attendent pour nous
— Gabrielle Sarthou
When people had to stay home to avoid spreading COVID-19, home meal delivery became (almost) an essential service. The two curfew periods documented by Emmanuelle Léonard form the series Black Out: Les livreurs/The Deliverers. Focusing on these nocturnal workers with thermal cameras, she highlights the energy they deploy as they practise their trade. Imbued with questions about labour, time, and relationships, the images inspired Gabrielle Sarthou to adopt a social metaphor. “Delivery people are like spiders whose trajectories weave complex and almost invisible structures in the shadows,” Sarthou suggests. “Their movements are sprawling, labyrinthine, punctuated with stopping points. If we were to map [their] movements with orange lines, we would no doubt come up with a spiderweb.”
