— Sophie Bertrand
The Scottish-born (like his contemporary, William Notman) photographer Alexander Henderson was brought out from the anonymity in which he had languished for more than a century when the McCord Stewart Museum paid him tribute with an exhibition that highlighted the artistic potential of his compositions. This “photographic heritage, presented through original prints, large-format prints, and projections, brings together “painting-like images” influenced by romanticism and the picturesque. “Although the exhibition takes us back to the era of technological innovations through the prism of photography,” Sophie Bertrand writes, “it also transports us to the colonial period and the arrival of masses of European immigrants.” The addition of archival texts (such as correspondence) provides a context for Henderson’s body of work. As Bertrand notes approvingly, this effort is inscribed within the museum’s decolonization process.
