Hiwa K, Do you remember what you are burning?
The Power Plant, Toronto
20.05.2022 — 28.08.2022
— Jill Glessing
In works that Jill Glessing describes as “rang[ing] in complexity,” the Iraqi Kurd artist Hiwa K exposes his critiques of Western geopolitics. “His engagement,” Glessing writes, “... and his resistance to institutional art make for some interesting tensions within his role as an artist exhibiting at Toronto’s The Power Plant.” Hiwa K carefully avoids “direct blame and didacticism,” although his comments, whether they concern the arms trade or issues related to exile, point out the hypocrisy of certain systems. In a video projection dealing with survival in a rationalist world, “the layered ideas ... express one of Hiwa K’s key critiques of Western ‘verticality,’ as opposed to the value of ‘horizontality’ that shares ad spreads engagements across communities,” Glessing concludes.
